Wedding Labels and Invitation

VECTOR / LAYOUT / PRINT / CLIENT
SEPTEMBER 2023 – MARCH 2024

When my dad and Julie met, it was love at first sight. I hoped to invoke the same emotions with the custom creative design of these wedding labels. The project was simple: create labels to be printed on small jars full of gummy lobsters. Held at a casual and rustic venue, the clambake wedding, a real New England tradition allowed for a lot of creativity. My dad wanted something more visually appealing than a plain jar, even if it’s just a simple label on both sides. Lucky for him, his daughter is a designer. Designing fun labels for gummy lobster favor jars would be a personal and creative expression of the love Dad and Julie shared.

Beyond the Sketch

In-depth research led to fairytale and Disney-like motifs which was perfectly fitting for a couple – and a family – obsessed with Disney! From here, the “Happily Ever After” design theme was born.  Zapfino, a traditional, modern and calligraphic font creates the signature hierarchy, expressive of formality and elegance while still being readable. Different blue tones with a white background brought it all together while nodding towards the oceanic theme of the event.

Constraints & Confusions

Although the sketches I had sent my dad and stepmom were approved, some things ended up changing. For instance, the design was originally created in a square shape, but ended up having to move to a circular frame for cost-cutting reasons. Also, the design went through another designer and there were some confusions regarding my original design vision. However, everything was smoothed out pretty easily.

The last thing that was changed before the final print was some of the glyphs to make the typography more cohesive and flow better.

The Final Product (for then)

Once the designs were finalized, it was time to print! Once everything was printed, stuck on the jars, and assembled, they were wedding-ready. Even after they’ve served their purpose at the wedding, it’s pretty nice being able to store your makeup brushes in jars that have a decal you designed on it. However, there was more I wanted to do with this afterwards other than just reusing the jars.

To Infinity, and Beyond!

Although the invitations actually used for the event were gorgeous, it’d be good for learning design cohesiveness to expand upon them as if I were asked to do it in the first place. Et voila, my rendition of the wedding invitations!

Inspired by oceanic motifs and a bit of Disney magic, these invitations are something that Ariel from The Little Mermaid would be jealous of.  However, in a more formal invitation, a fairytale phrase didn’t quite fit no matter what I tried, so I settled on keeping it more serious, yet keeping the casual vibe of the event.

Working backwards for client work can be a bit fun even when the initial work is over. As Walt Disney said, “it’s kind of fun to do the impossible!”
